Cromwell Dixon was born in San Francisco in 1892. While he was a young child the family moved to Columbus, Ohio. While there he built and flew a human-powered dirigible and later a motorized version. On August 6, 1911 he received his pilot's license, flying a Curtiss plane. On September 30, 1911 he was the first to fly over the Continental Divide near Helena, Montana.
